About

Dr. Bencardino started her academic career as Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School (2000-2003) and was promoted to full Professor of Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery at NYU School of Medicine (2015). Dr. Bencardino holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the Colegio Divino Salvador in Bogota, Colombia (1984). Dr. Bencardino studied Medicine at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana where she graduated in 1991. She is board certified in Radiology, both in Colombia (1996) and in the United States (2000). Dr. Bencardino completed fellowship training in Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases NYU Medical Center in 1997.


Dr. Bencardino has served as Guest Editor for the MRI Clinics of North America (2012) and Seminars in Musculoskeletal Imaging (2013). She is the Section Editor of “Imaging of the Knee” published in “Insall and Scott Surgery of the Knee”, Sixth Edition (2015). Dr. Bencardino was a member of the Editorial Board of Skeletal Radiology, the Journal of the International Skeletal Society since 2010 to 2018. She is also a member of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Editorial Committee for the American Journal of Roentgenology (2013-present). She received the “Reviewer of Distinction” award from Skeletal Radiology (2010, 2011) and the Editor’s Recognition Award with Distinction from Radiology (2014).


Dr. Bencardino is the recipient of the 2013 President’s Medal of the International Skeletal Society (ISS). Education and mentorship have been a major focus of Dr. Bencardino’s career, work recognized by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in bestowing her as the recipient of the 2014 RSNA Honored Educator award. Lastly, Dr. Bencardino’s commitment to professional excellence in the field of Radiology merited her Who’s Who lifetime achievement award.


In the public service realm, Dr. Bencardino is the founder of Free Spirit Tennis & Soccer (2015). Dr. Bencardino, a passionate tennis player and former soccer player at her Medical School founded a volunteer group that brings sports instruction to the Juvenile Detention Center in Westbury, New York.
