About

Leslie V. Simon, D.O., is the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. Simon also serves as director of the J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Simulation Center, fellowship director for medical simulation and holds the academic rank of assistant professor of emergency medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.


Dr. Simon earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and her medical degree from College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova Southeastern University, Davie, Florida. She completed an internship in family practice at Naval Hospital of Jacksonville and an emergency medicine residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, serving as academic chief resident in her final year.


From 1998 to 2008 Dr. Simon served as a Medical Corps officer for the United States Navy. She deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she directed mass casualty and emergency medical services. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic in 2013, she held positions in emergency medicine and military and teaching programs at University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, Florida; Naval Medical Center San Diego, Naval Hospital Guam, and Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain.


Dr. Simon has been invited to present on her work internationally and achieves publication in numerous high-impact scientific journals. She is a national faculty member of The Difficult Airway Course and has trained thousands of providers in airway management. She serves as reviewer for Western Journal of Emergency Medicine,Journal of Evidence Based MedicineEmergency Medicine Practice, Clinical Teacher and MedEdPortal. In addition to her roles in simulation, research and patient care, she is highly active in teaching and mentoring opportunities.


Throughout her training and career Dr. Simon has been lauded for her teaching skills and service to emergency and simulation medicine. For her service in the United States Navy and Marine Corps, she was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal and the Commendation Medal. Her most recent honors include the Service Award for Commitment to Education, conferred by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine; Exemplary Teacher Award, conferred by University of Florida College of Medicine; and Outstanding Faculty Teacher of the Year, conferred by the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida.
